How long can Instagram videos be?

Video Length Limits for Instagram Feed, Stories, Live and IGTV

You may think that Instagram allows only 1-minute long videos.

Well – it depends.

What kind of video are we talking about?

Is it a regular post or is it an ad?

Is it a video for your IG feed?

A story? A live video? Or are you planning to put it up on IGTV?

If you haven’t made up your mind yet, here’s a quick look at the different Instagram video length limits before we get into the details.

  • Video Length for Instagram Posts : 3 Seconds – 1 Minute
  • Video Length for Instagram Stories: Maximum of 15 seconds per story
  • Video Length for Instagram Live Videos: 60 Minutes of live-streamed footage.
  • Video Length for IGTV: 10 minutes for a basic account. Verified accounts or Instagram profiles with a large number of followers get up to 60 minutes.

Ok, now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s show you how you can make the most of these video time limits.

Ready?

Let’s begin.

1. Video Length For Instagram Posts

A minimum of 3 seconds and a maximum of 1 minute.

That’s the time limit to keep in mind when creating video content for Instagram feeds.

If your video is over 1 minute, Instagram lets you trim out the excess bits and select the 60 seconds you want to be uploaded.

Videos on Instagram's feed need to be trimmed to under a minute
Instagram lets you upload only 60sec videos on your feed so make sure to be precise and to the point

Simply select your video in the upload menu, then go to the ‘Trim’ option to edit your video’s length.

It’s that simple.

Now, you’re probably frowning at your screens, thinking “How in God’s name am I supposed to say everything I want to say in a minute?”

Relax – There’s a simple hack to upload an Instagram video that’s longer than 60 seconds.

The Carousel Post

The Carousel feature lets you upload up to 10 photos or videos in a single post – kind of like a slideshow.

The carousel post helps you trim down a large video into multiple small clips which play sequentially
A simple Instagram video hack to upload longer videos on your feed is the Carousel Post

To make a carousel out of your video, chop it into smaller, minute-long clips.

Once you’ve got your clips, go to the upload menu and select the ‘multiple post/Carousel’ option (The one that looks like 2 squares stacked on each other).

Now, select your video clips in order and upload them.

Voila!

All your video’s content squeezed into a single IG post.

You can trim your videos for carousel posts using your phone’s in-built video editor.

If you’re looking for something a little more powerful, there’s a library of awesome video editing apps you can use.

Inshot, iMovie, Splice and Adobe Premiere Rush are some great options for the job.

2. Video Length For Instagram Stories

Instagram stories have a 15 second time limit per individual story.

This goes for images and video content

If your video is longer, Instagram will automatically splice it up into 15-second pieces.

Instagram lets you upload only 4 cards of 15 seconds each on Instagram stories

This works only for videos that are up to a minute long though. You can upload only 4 cards at a time this way.

If your video content is longer than a minute, then trim it into smaller, minute-long sections yourself.

Again, the tools I’ve given you above are going to come in very handy here.

Oh, the time limit here applies to videos posted in live stories as well.

Remember - Only 15-second live video footage at a time!

3. Video Length For Instagram Live

If you’re shooting a video for Instagram Live, you can stream up to 1 hour’s worth of video at a time.
